FAQs

Counseling Approach

I offer individual, one-on-one counseling to diverse individuals facing issues including, but not limited to, addiction, anger management, anxiety, depression, emotional regulation, grief, life transitions, loss, self-image, shame, and trauma. We explore biological, psychological, social, environmental, and spiritual influences on mental health. I guide clients to discover these factors for themselves and improve their lives.

I specialize in therapy for adult individuals. I do offer child, couples, or marriage & family therapy.

I utilize therapies that have been extensively researched and validated—eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), and acceptance commitment therapy (ACT). Each of theses evidence-based approaches has been demonstrated helpful with a wide range of problems.

ACT fosters psychological flexibility, helping clients manage unwanted thoughts and emotions by aligning actions with their values. CBT enables clients to identify and replace unhelpful thought and behavior patterns with effective coping strategies, reducing mental health issues.

Trained in EMDR (EMDR Consulting, 2025), I help clients heal from trauma-related distress using bilateral stimulation (eye movements, tapping, or tones) to process troubling thoughts, feelings, and phobias. EMDR can provide relief in a few sessions for some. Others, especially complex trauma, need longer periods for processing.

Building psychological flexibility takes time and is gradual. However, with effort some begin to experience the effects quickly. Sessions can make you feel sad, anxious, angry, or frutstrated. Counseling normally involves homework that you choose like practicing skills, reading, journaling, planned exposure, or working on a new coping mechanism.

Diagnosis and Insurance

Insurance companies require a mental health diagnosis to reimburse for treatment. That diagnosis is then in your medical records. These aren’t meant to define who a person is or give them a crutch–just the opposite! Identifying the problem means we will design a treatment plan that provides the structure of your therapy and an objective assessment of progress.

We work with most insurance companies but coverage depends on your deductible and whether your specific plan will reimburse for counseling. Further, your insurance may require us to share relevant service details.

Some conditions do not qualify for insurance reimbursement. In cases where a mental health diagnosis is not possible, or where a client not wish to have a mental health diagnosis in their medical record, self-pay is the best option.

Litigation and Legal Testimony

We do not provide legal assistance or make custody evaluations. We can refer you to specialists in those areas.

We do not testify in legal matters and if required to do so you will be responsible for all costs including time and transportation. Legal consultations, report writing, preparation, and attendance are billed at $220 per hour.

For your safety and confidentiality, we do not discolse your records unless requested by a judge. When requested by court-order, we will provide the minimum information required by law.

Clients agree not to request my testimony in depositions, court, or other proceeding like child custody, divorce, or lawsuits, due to the potential of court-ordered release of confidential information in these proceedings. Clients also agree not to seek disclosure of medical records or progress notes, whether by you, your attorney, or anyone acting on your behalf.

Location-Based Tracking and Search Engine Policy

Enabling location tracking on your phone may reveal your presence at the office and potentially compromise your privacy. This can happen inadvertently through Instagram settings, taking a photograph near the office, or location services like “Find Friends” or “Life 360.” Consider whether such privacy steps are necessary in your own situation and whether or not to disable those features to protect your confidentiality and safety.

Privacy, Dual-Relationships, Social Media, Messaging, and Testimonials

Counseling requires a professional, rather than personal, relationship, where clients share sensitive information in a safe space—details about their lives, feelings, and experiences they might not feel comfortable sharing even with friends. To protect your privacy and well-being, our interactions will remain striclty professional.

Your privacy requires insuring your identity before we discuss confidential information. Please refrain from discussing sensitive issues via text messages where identities can’t be confirmed. Texting and voicemails are limited to information like appointments and scheduling.

Your privacy is a priority. If we encounter each other in public or community settings, I will only acknowledge you if you initiate contact because such encounters may prompt uncomfortable questions from others present, questions that reveal our client-counselor relationship. Don’t worry, my feelings won’t get hurt if you don’t initiate contact!

I maintain a professional social media presence but will not accept friend requests from current or former clients on personal accounts, as this creates a dual relationship that could jeopardize your privacy. You may follow, like, or comment on my professional pages (e.g., Facebook, Google, Psychology Today), but be mindful of potential privacy risks.

Similarly, please avoid messaging me via social media platforms. For secure communication, use our official, encrypted, HIPAA-compliant client platform.

Testimonials

Our primary concern is your privacy. Confidentiality means that we take great measures to protect your privacy. This is why we do not request testimonials. However, you are welcome to tell anyone you wish that you are receiving services from me, and how you feel about the services provided to you, in any forum of your choosing.

Your privacy is our priority, and we uphold strict confidentiality. For this reason, we do not request testimonials. You are free to share your experience with our services and how you feel about them with anyone, in any setting of your choice, however be mindful of the potential privacy risks.

Professional Associations

I’m a member of the American Association of Christian Counselors (AACC), The American Counseling Association (ACA), the Association of Contextual Behavioral Science (ACBS), and the EMDR International Association (EMDRIA).

The AACC is an evangelical organization that helps counselors and pastors integrate biblical knowledge in their counseling.

The ACA is the nation’s foremost professional counseling organization which sets the accrediting and ethical standards for counseling.

The ACBS is the primary global assocation for researchers and practitioners of acceptance committment therapy.

EMDRIA provides training and certification for clinicians who specialize in EMDR therapy. I received training and supervision through EMDR Consulting and am an associate member of EMDRIA while seeking additional supervision and certification.

Qualifications & Restricted Licensure

I am licensed as a Clinical Mental Health Counselor Associate in North Carolina–LCMHCA. The “A” at the end of LCMHCA stands for “associate.” I graduated from Montreat College in 2025 with a Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling which involved 600+ hours of supervised counseling. The LCMHCA licensure in North Carolina requires 3000 more hours of clinical supervision. My supervisor is Katherine Therrell of Arden, NC. This means your therapy receives clinical consultation and oversight resulting in the highest quality care!

Religion and Spirituality

I counsel clients from diverse relgious and spiritual backgrounds–whether you are a Christian, consider yourself “spiritual,” or even if you do not consider yourself religious at all. I graduated from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville in 1994 with a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology–its in my DNA to look at every person through their own cultural lense!

I believe in Jesus and the Christian Scripture. I believe every human being is made in the image of God and possesses innate dignity, competence, and autonomy.  I earned a Master of Divinity from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1997 and my services are in the context of decades of Christian ministry. When appropriate I adapt evidence-based interventions through historic Christian devotional practices like prayer and Scripture meditation.

During therapy we look at every aspect of your life that can affect your mental health–the bio, psycho-social, and the spiritual. For my approach, these are like the three wheels on a tricycle and our relationship with God is the Big Wheel! Whether or not we engage the Big Wheel is up to you.

Sliding Scale Rates

We do not offer sliding scale rates. When appropriate, we can work together on a treatment plan that incorporates bibliotherapy alongside bi-weekly or monthly in-person sessions.

We provide services to a limited number of clients on a pro-bono basis. Unfortunately these slots are currently full.

Telehealth

If geographic or physical challenges apply and you are in North Carolina, telehealth services may be offered via a HIPAA-compliant, encrypted portal using real-time, two-way audio and video. For your safety, you agree to provide us with the physical address from which you receiving telehealth services.

All confidentiality guidelines, laws, and treatment expectations for in-person sessions, as outlined in the professional disclosure statement, apply to telehealth, with identical fees. Instructions for accessing the portal will be provided. By consenting, you acknowledge potential risks, including possible disruption, distortion, or compromise of private health information during transmission. Recording or sharing any identifiable images or information from telehealth sessions is prohibited.
